Q. Explain in the light of Archimedes Principle as to why a nail sinks into water while several tons heavy ship floats on the sea.
A Nail Sinks and a Ship Floats
A nail sinks because its weight is more than its up thrust. On the other hand, the heavy ship floats because it is constructed in such a way that it displaces larger volume of water. As the volume of the ship is more and so upthrust on it will be also large. This upthrust balances its weight and supplies some upward force. Owing to this reason, the ship floats on the sea.
