Types of Nails and Screws
(i) Wire Nails
(ii) Cut Clasp Nails
(iii) Spikes
(i) Wire Nails
These are either oval or circular in cross section. Oval nails used for several purposes.
(ii) Cut Clasp Nails
These are cut out of the malleable iron rods. The oval wire nails have better holding power in comparison to cut clasp nails.
(iii) Spikes
Wire nails exceed 130mm in length are named as spikes. These are used for joining large wooden pieces.

Screws
Screws are made of the bright drawn mild steel wires, copper or brass. Generally for wood-work flat headed and round type screws are used. Screws are fixed by means of screw driver or brace.
Uses and Main Advantages of Screws
(a) These can be easily removed without damaging the wood.
(b) These can be easily fixed without splitting the wood.
(c) The joint is stronger than nails.
Specification of Screws
The wood screws are specified by length, gauge and type of head. A coach screw is similar to the wood screw, except its head is square or hexagonal. 1hese are often used for connecting metal plates, straps and angles to wood.
