The Editor,

Sir,
Kindly let me express my views, through the columns of your esteemed Daily on a matter of profound significance. The modern society is becoming more and more faithless. The religious and moral values which were the mainstay of the Pakistani society are fast giving place to the materialistic values. This lack of morality, faith and ethics is visible in every field, whether it is business, politics, or society in general. Most of the social ills present today are because of the separation of morality or faith from life.
I am, therefore, of the opinion that there is an urgent need of introducing moral education in schools. Childhood or boyhood is an impressionable age. This is an age when any thing taught to a person is imprinted on his mind almost permanently. The things learned at this stage have a great bearing upon a person’s future behaviour. Therefore, a child should be taught the good things of life.
Unfortunately, in the name of secularism, we have done away with moral education in schools and colleges. However, the moral education need not be the education about one religion. A child can be taught good things of life without teaching him any particular religion. The syllabus of moral education may include all the good things of life without necessarily including any particular religion. The child should be taught to give equal respect to all religions; he should be told the importance of faith, honesty, fair dealing, abstinence, etc. It is the time, the whole country should introduce moral education in the syllabi of different universities. I proposed that at least one period daily should be devoted to moral education. This will go a long way in tacking the malaise that is afflicting us at the present time.
Yours Sincerely,
Masab Ahmed
