The modern science hid its beginning in the seventeenth century. It has made great progress and added much to the comfort of human life. It has conquered space and tire it has linked t gather all the part of the world. It has diminished disease and poverty. It has raised the standard of living. It has built air conditioned palatial buildings. But has it brought happiness to man?
Happiness is a state of mental satisfaction. This, perhaps, science has failed to achieve There was a tune, before the appearance of modern science, when men were satisfied with their lives. No doubt, there were the rich and the poor, but there was no enmity between the two. The invention of deadly weapons of war has destroyed the peace of the world. We are living under the shadow of another world war. Science has given us many physical comforts but it has snatched away our peace of mind.
This world is full of disputes between the capitalist and the laborer the landlord and the tenant. A bitter class-struggle has started. The capitalists have joined hands to exploit the laborers. The laborers have got together to get the maximum share in the fruits of this earth. The capitalist is unhappy because of the constant threat of strikes by the workers. The laborer is sad because his income cannot meet his growing needs.
In the modem world of science, man may be well-fed, well-clothed and richly provided with the luxuries of life but he is not happy. He has always one thing or the other troubling his mind. And the greatest curse of science is that it has made us machines. Men have lost the sense of brotherhood. We have no sympathy with one another. We are too worried about ourselves to care for others. We do not know our next door neighbors. We are strangers in this over-populated world. We are not happy. And science is responsible for all this.
