The pleasures and opportunities of college life are only for those who look for them. A college provides all sorts of facilities for a full and active life. If the students take an active and intelligent interest in their collective affairs, they will learn many useful things. They will be better prepared t lead a responsible life. Colleges have various clubs and societies to organize the activities of the students. These clubs and societies like the Literary Circ, Economics Society. Science Club arrange meetings and function; for the education of their members. But the most useful and important organ of the students is the students’ union.
The students union is the representative society of the students. Its function is to look after the welfare of the students and help them. It arranges functions, meetings and other activities in which the students, as a group, are interested. educationsight.blogspot.com It trains the students for a responsible position in a democratic society.
The students union is a democratic institution formed by the students themselves. The office-bearers of the union are elected by the students every ear. They include a president, a vice-president, a secretary, a joint secretary and a number of class representatives. A senior member of the staff supervises the activities of the union. He helps and guides the office-bearers.
After the elections the new offices holders chalk out a programme for the session. The first item is always the organization of debates. Every college hold a number of debates including at least two All-Pakistan debates every year. In addition to debates, the union also arranges other functions as declamation contests, symposiums, mushairas etc. It also invites distinguished writers, speakers, states-men, and foreign visitors.
Some students unions confine themselves to these activities, But others find many more useful things to do for the students. They approach the wealthy people ad get financial help for the students. Poor students are given stipends. Some unions also under take some social service projects. I suggest that the students’ unions should help the needy students in getting part-time employment to finance their studies. The students unions can also help in promoting discipline among the students. This, I think, is the greatest service that the unions can do for the cause of the students and education.
The students union is not a trade union for bargaining. There is no opposition between the interests of the teachers and the students. They pursue the same end which is education. It is the duty of the students unions to create an atmosphere necessary for the pursuit of knowledge. Only then they justify their existence.
