The Editor,
The Daily Dawn,
Karachi.
Sir,
Through these columns of your esteemed paper I want to draw the attention of the Traffic Police to the reckless driving in Karachi. It appears as if the roads, the streets and the lanes have been made for the use of buses, minibuses, taxis, rickshaws, motor-cycles and cars only. They drive so recklessly that it is risky to walk along the roads. These plying deaths takes the life of scores of innocent people daily and the authorities are helpless.
Reckless driving cannot be stopped unless dynamic changes are brought about. Firstly the traffic police must realize their duty. Secondly the licenses of the drivers who break the traffic rules must be cancelled and, a fool proof system of licensing be evolved so that those drivers may not get another license issued, the system of justice must be changed as to punish the culprits promptly. Now-a-days cases take so long time that the witnesses get tired of attend the courts frequently for years and some of them lose their jobs and business due to attending the courts too frequently. So they stop attending the courts. The result is that culprits usually go unpunished. Some of the culprits are not even challenged and illegal gratifications save them.
Yours faithfully,
Shafaq Tazeen
