Short Story on "A Stitch in Time Saves Nine"

There runs a legend that once there lived a boy in Holland, who was fond of outdoor life and wandered and loafed here and there. One evening, while he was loitering about the dyke, he saw water oozing out of a certain spot in the dike. He looked attentively and found a very small hole at the spot through which the sea water was coming out. The boy was intelligent. As soon as lie saw the hole, he became alarmed. He thought that the sea water would gradually widen the hole by eating up the surrounding soil and would drown his city if something was not done to stop the water. To repair the damage it needed men to work and there was no one around to take the message to the city and call men to work.educationsight.blogspot.com Seeing no way out, he decided to do w1iat little he could. So he inserted one of his fingers into the hole. The job was ponderous but he kept on till it was day break. Some people happened to come to the dike, saw the boy and learnt about the matter. They ran to the city, and announced about the leakage. Soon people ran to repair the damage. They brought the boy back to the city with great celebration and honoured him.

Old grand mothers still tell the heroic feat of the boy to their grand sons and grand daughters as bed time story.
