No one can deny the importance of libraries. They are useful for laymen, professionals and scholars. They make ancient and modern writings available to all those who cannot buy them. Costly text books and rare manuscripts are stored in libraries for the use of students and research scholars.

In the field of education, libraries play a very important role. Many books which are not readily available in the market or are so costly that very few student can buy them are kept in the libraries. educationsight.blogspot.comThey are tent to the readers and thus one book serves the needs of many. Similarly foreign publications and journals which are not imported by the book-sellers are directly purchased by the libraries. Teachers borrow these books and keep themselves abreast of all modern developments in the fields of humanities and sciences. In this manner the knowledge so acquired is passed on to the students and ultimately contribute to the national progress.

But the general libraries which are meant for the use of public are of no less importance. With the spread f education and increase in the literacy ratio, the demand for reading material increases. Those who want to spend their leisure hours in reading books become members of libraries and at a nominal cost can read all those books which they could not have seen otherwise. Since a common reader likes fiction, tales of adventure, historical narratives and biographies the librarians keep a good stock of such books.

There are libraries exclusively meant for the specialists also. Subjects such as medicine, law, engineering and technology are not read by common readers. Social libraries are established for these technical subjects where professional people and scholars can go and thrive benefit from the books. These libraries provide the specialists with the latest developments in their respective fields.

Libraries also serve as storehouses of ancient learning. Books which were published long ago are safety kept in the libraries. Rare manuscripts in the form of books, letters or diaries which could not be published during an author’s lifetime are preserved in the libraries. Every librarian takes pride in having such collections, but these are not issued to every inn. Only research students and specialists can see them.

In foreign countries, library facilities have been extended even to the remotest villages, Americans feel proud of their library of Congress and the British have a precious collection in the British Museum. We do not have any such library in Pakistan. Public libraries exist only in a few big cities. The need of the hour is to broaden the base of our library system so that every citizen of Pakistan can profit by it. This would require heavy expenditure books, staff and buildings, but the investment would be worthwhile as it would make the readers better citizen and cultured gentlemen.
