Velocity, Variable Velocity, Average Velocity, Uniform Velocity and Instantaneous Velocity

Q. Define the Velocity, Variable Velocity, Average Velocity, Uniform Velocity and Instantaneous Velocity.

Velocity
Distance covered by a body in unit time in a definite direction is called Velocity.

Variable Velocity
If a body does not cover equal distances in equal intervals of time in a specified direction then it is said to have variable velocity.

Average Velocity
The average velocity of a body is obtained by dividing the total displacement by the time taken. If the total displacement is denoted by ‘d’ and time by ‘t’ then the average velocity is given by the following equation:
Average Velocity = Total Displacement / Time
V= d/t

Uniform Velocity
If a body moves through equal distances in equal intervals of time, however small and its direction of motion also remains the same, it is said to possess Uniform Velocity, in case of Uniform Velocity the speed and direction of the body remain the same.

Instantaneous Velocity
Velocity of a body for very short intervals of time is called Instantaneous Velocity.
