Ours is an agricultural country. The farmer is the backbone of our economy. But he is still Jiving hr he medieval age. His life is an unending and unequal struggle against the elements. He has not benefitted by the modern progress and prosperity.In our country land holdings are small. The methods and implements of farming are as old as the caste system. The farmer works hard with the help of the gold plough to get enough from land of keep his body and soul together. He still follows his forefathers. But the world has changed. The land has become, less fertile and less productive.

The whole life of the farmer—his work, recreation and culture depends on the land. The rising sun finds him working in his fields. He works for four or five hours. He has to do a lot of work. l the sowing season, he has to plough and manure his fields, saw the seed and water the land. Then he has to look after the crop constant y. A thousand odd jobs need his attention. Fencing and weeding the fields, working his ox driven well, turning the earth with a hoe and such other tasks are to be done every other day. He has to look after his oxen and other animals.

If the is lucky, his crop grows rich and golden in due time. It is the harvest season then. He picks up his sickle and reaps his crop. It is the only job where the oxen do not help him. Then comes the time for winnowing and storing the grain. It is a hard life, but his reward is meagre. Sometimes, the rains and floods, sometimes the drought damage his crops, and he has to face starvation and nun. In recent years, the water logging and salinity have become dangerous problems. More and more land is becoming useless, and more and more farmers are facing complete ruin.

The whole structure of agriculture needs basic changes if the majority of our population is to be saved from utter poverty. Who will face the challenge? The farmer is poor, uneducated and backward. He cannot do much. The whole nation must make every effort to improve the lot of farmers. It is not a favour to him. Our survival as a free, prosperous and proud nation depends on it. Foreign aid cannot help us for long.
