The September War between India and Pakistan lasted for seventeen days. It was the result of the dispute over the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In 1947, at the time of Independence, India occupied Kashmir forcibly. In August 1965, the Kashmir is revolted against their Indian rulers. The Kahmirs living in Azad Kashmir crossed into the valley to free therefore homeland. India accused Pakistan of sending crusader to Kashmir. She invaded Azad Kashmir and occupied some of the border posts. The Indian forces also shelled a Pakistani village.
Pakistan demanded the withdrawal of Indian forces from Azad Kashmir. This being refused, Pakistan, took action in its defence. Azad Kashmir forces backed by Pakistan Army advanced in Chhamb Sector and within a few days liberated a large area of the occupied state. Indian army was completely routed.
Proud of her large army, India crossed the international border, Without any ultimatum, and attacked Lahore from three sides on the sixth of September. Mad with anger, the Indians attacked Sialkot. They planned to capture the G.T. Road between Gujranwala arid Wzirabad. But they forgot that they were face to face with a brave nation. In the battle of Chawinda, the Muslims relived their past. Wave after wave of Indian soldiers came for attack but met with firm resistance. The Muslims stood like a solid wall of lead. They repulsed every attack of the enemy. It was a great victory.
In Fazilka Sector, our brave soldiers captured forty square miles of enemy land. In Rajasthan the Indian Army was badly defeated and surrendered to the Pak Army a vast area of square miles. Our naval forces, too, were not idle. They destroyed the Indian naval and air base at Dawarka and sank an enemy naval ship.
Lastly, it is our Air Force which deserves all thanks and praise. Within the first few days of war, our gallant airmen broke the backbone of the Indian Air Force. They attacked Indian airfields again and again and destroyed a large number of enemy aircraft. Indian pilots were so much afraid of our Airmen that in the last days of war they rarely crossed into Pak territory. At last the war ended on the 23rd of September, with the intervention of the U.N.O.
