Sir,

Most respectfully and politely I request you to kindly excuse my absence from the ensuing Half-yearly Examination. My mother died last week. The shock was so great that I could not concentrate my mind on my studies.

Moreover, I being the eldest-son had to perform all the religious rites. I had to be absent from the school, much against my wish for about a fortnight. I hope you will grant my request on account of the reasons mentioned above.
